Thanks for posting the transcript here. A really interesting interview, not just for what it told us about Patrick, but for something it reveals about the nature of this new technological/ information/ internet-based world we now live in. I suppose every teacher I ever had told me that his or her subject would be important to me. And, lucky for me, I tended to believe whatever I was told in school (sometimes an annoying habit, but positive in this case). I knew a lot of people going through with me, though, who would say things like, “I’m really good in English, never really cared much about math,” or vice versa, or who were fantastic musicians, but couldn’t find Italy on a map. One of the revealing things about Patrick’s background is how diverse it is, and particularly how diverse his education has been. I suspect, but I will leave it as an open question here, that this is a brand new age, where success is going to demand high-level skills in multiple fields at once. Things like design and programming, the ability to compose a pithy piece of music and a facility with creating interesting text, all have a potential place in a successful site, and the successful web designer will need to find ways to educate him or herself in all of them.
